Is it just me or is everything just …..

I was in Heuston Station last night, with a time to eat before the train, and found that the only place open was Supermacs. This would normally be a cause for rejoicing, but I’m afraid the great Irish Burger Chain is slipping.
Twice now I have tried their new Jalapeno Triple melt, in different outlets, and neither has been very good. In theory it is a triple burger with jalapeno sauce, specially for the winter chills. In practice, the three meat patties are a bit on the weak side, at least to my eye. The jalapeno is token – the burger certainly has some sort of spicy sauce, and I have not doubt but that there is enough janapeno in it to satisfiy the labelling laws, but I’ve had hotter cups of coffee.
In the same vein, one of their competitors, Burger King, is making a big play of their Angus Burgers, made, obviously, from genuine Angus beef. You might feel they are being advertised as being in some way better than the average burger, although if you watch the advert carefully, they never actually say that – and it is just as well. Being a carnivore and an advertising victim, I tried one a couple of weeks ago, and I’m afraid it was a bit of a waste. It wasn’t any better than the regular BK offering, I wasn’t able to leap tall buildings after it and I won’t bother with it again.
In all my recent adventures with fast food, I don’t think I have seen an Irish person behind the counter at all – I guess we now consider ourselves too good for those service jobs which fall to immigrants (many of whom are far better qualified than the people they are serving). How exactly this works at closing time, I don’t know – how do Poles interpret orders from Irish drunks for ‘zheeezboirger’n’gaaaarlkfryzepluzedereduarlyng..hic..’? I don’t see how this tallies with McDowell’s plan to control immigration by having a ‘green card’ system to get in skilled immigrants. Clearly we need people to fill all our empty tech jobs, but the Rottweiler better include a category for shop assistants, fast food workers and cleaners, or else the country will grind to a halt.
