My writing over the past two decades has mainly focused on games in teaching and learning, and on personal learning workflows. I have been interested in games as models, particularity of history, since the 1970’s and in the process of how we manage information and knowledge since the mid-1980s.
Over the past decade, a lot of my publications have been reactions to calls for papers where I had something moderately relevant to say so I sent in paper proposals, and then if they were accepted had to actually write the paper. This has worked out well, but it isn’t the best so now I am focused on writing things which I feel are important rather than reacting to calls for papers as they pop up.
Publication lists are the cornerstone and the bane of academic life – they are essential to share research which is a substantial part of what we are paid to do. However, they live in many places and many formats – I have one in Zotero which is mostly up to date, and one in the university Research Information System, and some open access publications on our University online research archive. Its hardly a surprise that none of these three synchronize properly (and my official research profile is linked to the wrong dept anyway!) There are also lists on two other sites which I no longer support because they have developed into proprietary cash grabs, even though I do get a some hits through them.
Anyway, this is the list as it currently stands. I have several projects in hand – a book chapter on Twine games for 2024, something on the development of wargame rules and military historiography around the 1970s, two “books” which I will probably find a way to share as open textbooks, one on games and simulations and one on personal knowledge workflows; and a couple of other ideas which I’m resisting so that I finish the ones which I have already started.
