Web reaches the barn

Barn Office ViewWhoot! I’ve got network connectivity out to my office in the barn, at last. For some of you this is no big deal, but between digging the trench, locating external grade CAT5 cable and above all, getting all those fiddly little green-white and brown-white striped wires into the right slots on an RJ45 jack, it was a hassle. Some of you, of course, can wire an RJ45 jack in your sleep, crossed pairs for gigabit ethernet, and I’m happy for you. The first time I tried, I spent three hours not succeeding – I can get a database to 5th normal form, but I don’t do hardware. Then I looked up some of the useful videos on YouTube, and today I aced it. A big thanks to all the people who put 3 minute howto videos on Youtube.

So the shot on the right, from my v630i, is the view of the start of this post on my laptop, with the current cup of coffee, out the window of my writing den. From here I can see clear past Limerick into Tipperary, and I can access the UN documentation server, which has most of the official files which I need for the next section of the current book. Now, as long as the foundations for the greenhouse don’t cut my cable, we’ll be happy. I think I’ll dig that section of the foundations myself, with a teaspoon!
