The new Pet Shop Boys single is called ‘I’m with Stupid’ and it surely become an anthem. It works on two levels – political and relationships.
On the political level it is supposed to be about the Blair-Bush relationship, it the lyrics are fairly clear on that issue. No doubt anti-war protest groups will learn it, sign it (out of time and off-key) and cherish it for years.
On the relationship side, it is supposed to explain why people end up with the most unlikey partners – the whole ‘What does he see in her?’ issue, and it works there too. It will make it onto every wedding bands playlist, and many many grooms will get a smack across the jaw when the band play it ‘because the groom requested it’. Getting the band to play ‘I’m with stupid’ will be on every best man’s list of ‘fun’ things to do.
I hope they have a tee-shirt design and a movie script to go with the single – those boys are going to be able to use this one for their pension fund!
