I’m meltiiinnnngg…….

It’s the second day of 30 degree C heat here, with rock bottom humidity. I can’t live in this weather.

As far as I can see, the official reports from Shannon AIrport haven’t gone above 29 C but the father-in-laws Mercedes reported 30.5 C at Dooradoyle yesterday, and that is right in Limerick so it sounds plausible. Night-time it is falling to between 12 C and 16 C, and while I can get my 7 hours, many people I know are wandering around like bleary-eyed zombies (and shouldn’t be driving)

We could, with a bit of planning, get used to this weather and be organised to take advantage of it better, and we will next summer.

The bigger picture is cause for concern though. Met Eireann are looking at seeing the hottest July on record, and the country has already seen records for high temperature and low rainfall broken in several places this year. Limerick city has a partial hosepipe ban. Much of the green space in the city is turning brown and dry. Out in the countryside round us, the weather is perfect for saving hay, but hopeless for growing it. The first cut silage was late, and there won’t be much of a second cut by the looks of it. The only thing looking cheerful and happy are the thistles, and we could do without them.

For a country that has more weather than anywhere else, and that is famous for grumbling about it, we are not very good at dealing with the practical effects of colder, later winters and hotter, drier summers.

Maybe it’ll rain tomorrow.
