Can the Centre hold in Darfur?

I don’t see how the current peace deal between the Sudanese Government and the largest opposition group can hold up without the support of the smaller opposition groups in Darfur

The peace deal between the government and the Sudan Liberation Army provides for power sharing, financial compensation ofr Darfur and the incorporation of militias into the armed forces. However, 2 smaller factions in Darfur are holding out against the deal, demanding more power – including a vice-presidential slot – more autonomy and more money.

This is a classic case where most of the people want the war to end, but a minority hold out for more, and prolong the fighting. The risk is that the smaller and more extreme groups will, by their opposition, break the peace deal and also undermine the SLA. If the peace deal does not deliver results, the credibility of those who sigend it will be undermined. This is a scenrio which the world has seen in many conflicts recently. the government in Khartoum needs to understand that if they don’t support the current deal actively, then they will end up losing more in the long run. However, I expect that that won’t happen, the ‘war’ will go on and many more people will die.
